Sony Xperia Z7 Rumors

The biggest Sony Xperia Z7 rumors coincide with technological changes we’ll see over the coming years. As consumers make a push to have more choices to choose from, bigger options without having the added bulk, and more portability features packed in while not sacrificing price.
It sounds as though options won’t be a problem as we’re hearing three variants of the Z7 including a smaller, and more compact Mini, standard Z7, and Z7 Premium will all debut. A Z7 Mini is expected to cost less than the other two variants while still packing quite a punch. Outfitted with dual cameras, high end processor, HD resolution, and Google’s latest operating system out of the box.

The Z7 and Z7 Premium are likely to share similar specs and features including a robust front and back camera. Sony has done quite an amazing job over the years in introducing some amazing camera specs, and the same is expected in the 7th generation model. More megapixels, wide camera lens, optical image stabilization, auto laser focus, and something entirely new are all expected.
We’re also hearing the next generation technology including 3D features including both viewing and recording are expected. 3D smartphone technology is a long time coming, especially considering much of what we expect comes outfitted right in the palm of our hands. For game lovers, picture lovers, and those just wanting to surf the net can become a whole new experience of the Z7 features 3D technology.
While nothing has yet to be made official and we fully expect Sony to be tight-lipped on the upcoming Xperia Z7 it doesn’t stop us from disclosing what we’re already hearing, and what we want to see. We’ve been getting a lot of questions on the specs ad everything else packed into the Z7 which we’ve detailed below. For now, we’ll tell you much more, but don’t expect the official word on the launch to come until the 2017 summer straight from Japan.

Sony Xperia Z7 Price

Sony’s intent on bringing back former consumers and maintaining current one’s can be seen with a much cheaper price tag than previous versions. If the current rumors are true, we can see a launch price of the standard Z7 coming in between the $600 – $700 range. The Mini will undoubtedly be the cheaper model with an expected price around $50 less than the standard while the much larger Premium will be slightly more.
One of the biggest competitors to the Xperia Z7 in 2017 will be the Xiaomi Mi7 which is rumored to launch during the summer also. Xiaomi has made a reputation of launching high-end handsets much cheaper than the competition which could be Sony’s drive to drop the launch prices of the Z7. Competition from stiff competitors is a good thing, and with Xiaomi’s push to go global this makes the most sense.
Below are the latest rumors on the launch price all three variants of the Z7 including the Mini, Z7, and Premium across most markets around the globe.

Design and build quality

After the HTC One M8 and the HTC One M9, HTC is dropping the "One M" branding and just calling this device the "HTC 10." The new naming scheme is apt. The phone has slimmed down by cutting out a lot of extras that really didn't need to be there in the first place, and the front of the device has been greatly compacted and simplified. HTC's trademark massive speaker grills are gone, and the "HTC Bar"—an area of bezel dead space that housed only the HTC logo—is gone, too. These two changes let HTC significantly sink the vertical bezels on this device, resulting in a 5.1-inch phone that isn't ridiculously tall like past models were.
The theme of "addition by subtraction" continues in the rest of the phone. With the HTC 10, HTC seems intent on stripping its designs of the last four years down to the bare necessities, righting the wrongs of the previous version. The One M9 had a weird ridge that ran along the perimeter of the phone, almost like the front and back of the phone were two halves of a shell that didn't fit together. This is fixed in the 10, which looks smooth and uniform. The One M9 had a metal body but used a glossy coating that took away from the premium feel of the metal. The HTC 10 feels more like bare aluminum.
With the speaker grills gone, HTC has also done away with the exposed plastic covers that were on the top and bottom of the One M9. The whole front of the device is now covered in glass, which butts right up against the chamfered metal edge of the case. There are still two speakers on the HTC 10—one is a front-facing speaker that sits in the reasonably sized earpiece cutout on the top of the glass, and the other is a bottom-firing speaker next to the USB Type C port. These two speakers are easily the best of any 2016 flagship. They provide a ton of sound at high quality while not wasting the crazy amount of space that they did on past HTC phones. We still wouldn't want to use them to listen to music or anything, but for the occasional game audio or cat video, they're great.
Next to the earpiece is a massive front-facing camera. The large cutout makes way for what HTC says is the "first ever" smartphone with optical image stabilization on the front of the device. While HTC has shipped front-facing cameras with sensors that go as high as 13MP, this is only a more pedestrian 5MP sensor.
For the buttons, HTC went with a Samsung-y hardware home button/fingerprint reader with capacitive back and recent buttons on either side. The fingerprint sensor seems to be the same thing everyone else is using—a fast, accurate touch sensor that is just as good as the iPhone's Touch ID. Usually an implementation like this will go with a clicky home button, but here it's a stationary capacitive button

Pros
  • Flagship-level performance
  • Water-resistant design
  • Lightweight, unobtrusive Android skin
Cons
  • Not worth the asking price
  • Lacks some features you'd expect from a flagship
  • Middling camera
  • Occasionally overheats

Summary

Sony, what are you doing? Though the $700 Xperia X Performance features a flagship-level processor and runs well as a result, Sony apparently didn't feel the need to bring anything new to the table. What we have here is a reasonably good smartphone that lacks soul or ambition, and ultimately costs too much for what it is.

Missing design features

There are a few features you may want that are missing or in odd places on the Xperia X.
If you live anywhere outside the United States, your power button will double as a fingerprint sensor. Sadly, and for what we only assume are legal or security reasons, Sony has disabled this feature on the Xperia Z5 and now the X Series phones. Representatives told us this feature is something Sony wants to include in future devices but just didn’t have “enough time.” Sad.
Now that most phones sport fast fingerprint sensors, we’ve been very annoyed having to go back to unlock a phone with a PIN code. You really need security on your lock screen, so if a PIN doesn’t work for you, we suggest buying another phone.
If you’re expecting the Xperia X to be IP68 waterproof like the entire Z series, have a seat. I have some bad news for you. Sony is only waterproofing the more expensive, $700 Xperia X Performance, from what we understand. So this is yet another phone that should stay in a dry place at all times. We have no idea how water resistant it is, but it hasn’t passed any tests to prove so.
For some reason, Sony still places the audio jack on the top of the Xperia X instead of the bottom, where most other phones now sport it. A jack at the bottom makes it easy to naturally pocket your phone with headphones still connected.
Finally, the speaker quality on the X is also weak. It doesn’t match the volume of an iPhone or high-end Android and sounds tinny. No phone has good sound, but we’d rate the X lower than others, especially quality handsets like the HTC 10.

Quality software, we’re hopeful on updates

In a change of pace, Sony has scaled back its software. The X comes with an almost pure Google version of Android 6.0 Marshmallow. This is fantastic because the standard Googley version of Android looks pretty damn good these days. Sony has made a few improvements in simple ways, which we like. For example, you can swipe down on the home screen to search through your apps. Or, if you go into the apps menu, you can see recent apps and even hold down to make it possible to delete any app with one tap. Both of these features are very iPhone-like, but helpful.

Hardware

Even though the X Performance is the most high-end of the four Xperia phones Sony plans to launch in the US, you wouldn't be able to tell just by looking at it. In fact, do yourself a favor: Don't put an Xperia X Performance down next to a regular Xperia X, because you'd probably never tell them apart. From the 5-inch, IPS LCD display up front to the 23-megapixel camera around back, these two devices are nearly identical. Well, until you spill a drink on them, at least. The X Performance picks up where previous Sony flagships left off with an IP68-rated chassis that helps it shrug off dust and water with ease, even when you stick it under a soda machine and let sticky stuff like Coke fly.

While earlier Xperia phones didn't receive software updates in a timely manner, there's nothing to worry about here: The X Performance ships with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. As usual, it's obscured somewhat by Sony's custom interface, and it can be pretty damn polarizing. For the most part, I'm fond of Sony's use of bold colors and minimal changes to the core Android experience. Those changes aren't minimal enough for some, though; my new colleague Cherlynn is no fan of Sony's changes, stylistic or otherwise. Sure, you'll have to contend with a few widgets enabled out of the box, but for the most part Sony has done well staying out of Android's way. My only real gripe: Swiping right in the app launcher brings up a search screen with recommendations for apps you should download, and some of them are sponsored. Ugh.

Apple 2016 MacBook review: More practical than you’d think, and stunning in pink

After years of life with the MacBook Air, I didn’t think I would like the rose gold 12-inch MacBook that Apple sent me a few weeks ago, with its shallow keyboard, the Intel Core M chip, the single USB-C port, and, oh, that color.
But I was wrong. I’ve come to really like this laptop. The springy keyboard is fun now. The performance isn’t bad at all. I’m proud to use a pink laptop. And it turns out that I can live with the one USB-C port.
Am I eager to see the refreshed MacBook Pro that Apple is expected to release later this year? Definitely. But for now, I can say I’m impressed with this machine, even considering its $1,299 starting price.
The next MacBook Pro is expected to be modeled after this 12-inch MacBook, and there are good reasons for that. This is a stunning device that weighs so little that you never think twice about taking it somewhere.
Unlike, say, the Surface Pro 4, the MacBook is easy to type on when it’s in your lap, just like my old 12-inch iBook from the early 2000s. It’s lighter and thinner, of course, but just as sturdy. How light? I can barely tell when it’s in my backpack — and I can’t say that about the MacBook Air. How thin? There’s just enough room in the base for the headphone jack on the right side and the USB-C port on the left side.
Like the keyboard, the trackpad is shallow; it doesn’t go down much when you click. Instead, you hear a subtle tapping sound. If you push down harder, you’ll hear a louder, decidedly more deliberate sound — that’s Force Click — even though the trackpad doesn’t actually click, in the conventional sense. Force Click still doesn’t let you do a whole lot, but it’s nice to have for things like previewing files in the Finder and getting definitions of words in the browser.
Still, the trackpad is very sensitive and precise, unlike pretty much any Windows laptop.
Then again, as is the case with any MacBook, you can’t bend the display back beyond a certain angle, and you can’t pop it off and use it as a tablet, either. Meh.
Altogether, though, this machine feels luxurious. The border between the keyboard and the trackpad is so narrow. The keys run from edge to edge. You can barely feel the seam between the bottom piece of aluminum and the body surrounding the keyboard. I can’t imagine what would happen if it were to fall to the ground.
Even though this MacBook style has been out in the world for more than a year, plenty of people still haven’t seen one in person before. And when they do, they’re usually amazed by the look and feel. You can’t say that about the new iPhone SE.
When I turned on the computer for the first time, the keyboard backlight was on, and it was nice and bright. I smiled — it was a pleasant surprise from the very beginning. And maybe that’s why I was really prepared to give this keyboard a chance. Initially, I was typing slower than usual on it, but my fingers have gotten better at the quick-pulse typing that this keyboard requires. You push a key down hard but only a little bit, and then you let go.
